Best winter activities in Île d’Orléans

Île-d’Orléans, on the St. Lawrence River nearby Quebec City, is devoted to agriculture & horticulture and is benefiting from agrotourism all year long. The island consists of 6 municipalities, it is about 34km long and 8km wide at its widest point. The island is accessible via the Île d’Orléans bridge from Beauport. I have listed a few ideas for a half day visit during winter time.

  • Chocolaterie de L’île d’Orléans
  • Promenade Horatio-Walker
  • Cidrerie Bilodeau
  • Ice Skating in Saint Laurent de l’île d’Orléans

Here we go:

  • Chocolaterie de L’île d’Orléans

This charming place manufactures home-made chocolate (raw material is imported from Belgium). We had a nice break with hot chocolate and more chocolate pralines to warm up.

Opening hours: not specified on the website but my understanding is that it is open all year round (café and ice cream is available only during summertime). Worth calling to verify exact opening hours

  • Promenade Horatio-Walker

Just in front of the Chocolaterie de L’île d’Orléans there is a short promenade worth visiting. You can reach this promenade at the junction of Rue Horatio-Walker and Chemin Royal (walking along Rue Horatio-Walker which is a dead-end). The promenade is located at the south-west tip of the island in the municipality of Sainte-Pétronille (offering a panoramic view towards Quebec City and the Montmorency Falls). The walk,  about 600 meters (return), is very close to the frozen water of the Saint-Lawrence River.

  • Cidrerie Bilodeau

This large family-owned orchard is offering all year activities, in the winter you can visit the shop and enjoy a free tasting. Summer activities include self-picking (apples), a petting zoo and cider tasting.

  • The municipality of Saint Laurent de l’île d’Orléans – Ice Skating

Free ice skating, a sledding area and an outdoor playground are available on this part of the island facing east and nearby a nautical club and a maritime park. In a small clubhouse on the left of the ice rink, you can find ice skating gear for free usage and a changing room & toilet.
